Ramsgate Tunnels

Due to the Corana Virus Pandemic we have been working to put in place a tour that allows us to ensure we are able to keep both our visitors and staff safe. A new tour taking in more of the railway tunnel, something that is normally only seen on our specialist tours, and tunnel town has been designed so you will still get a unique insight in what living underground in Ramsgate during WW2 was all about.  We will be resuming tours on August 1st so please check out our website at for further details and booking information.

Take a guided tour through part of the UK’s largest network of civilian wartime tunnels. After a short film it’s on with the hard hats as your guide leads you through the history of the fantastic 1,200 yard Victorian Railway tunnel before branching off into the purpose built 1939 Air Raid Precaution Tunnel. Here all the features of the tunnel system are explained as you tread the path used by thousands to shelter from air raids between 1939 and 1945.

  • Learn how the Kent Coast Railway tunneled their way to Ramsgate Harbour Station
  • Discover why Ramsgate needed such a large air raid shelter
  • Hear how the ‘Top Hat’ mayor and the the Borough Surveyor fought for the town’s safety
  • Discover how the air raid tunnels were built
  • See where a town below the town evolved housing nearly 1,000 people
  • Listen to stories of life underground
  • Find out how the tunnels were used after the war

If the wartime tunnels are not for you, come and browse in the unique atmosphere of a 150 year old Victorian Railway Tunnel – IT’S FREE! On display is a model of the original Ramsgate Harbour Station and railway plans showing how the railway arrived at the sands in 1863. You can explore parts of the tunnels these days inaccesible to the public using our touch screen displays, there’s fascinating oral histories from people who were there delivered through period telephones, and there’s our new free to enter TUNNEL MUSEUM & HOME FRONT EXHIBITION full of information, photographs and period artefacts

Of course, there is always time to relax over a cup of tea, coffee or chocolate with a slice of cake at our ‘Tunnels Teas’ cafe.
