Roman Painted House

Part of a large ‘mansio’ (official hotel) for travellers crossing the channel, built c.200AD and demolished during the construction of the shore fort. Its burial resulted in the survival of over 400 square feet of painted plaster with large murals showing scenes of Bacchus, god of agriculture and wine.
