Diggerland Veteran Takes the Crown Against the UK’s Youngest Qualified CPCS Backhoe Loader Operator in Epic Head-to-Head Challenge

Diggerland UK Theme Park, the ultimate construction-based adventure destination, recently hosted an exclusive and exciting event at its Kent park on Saturday 11th April, bringing together experience and emerging talent in a head-to-head digger duel.

The special event saw long-standing Park Manager Dave Smith go digger to digger with Finlay Gallagher, the youngest qualified CPCS Backhoe Operator in the UK. The competition unfolded across three high-energy rounds on Diggerland’s popular “Skittles” attraction, where contestants used a custom-made digger attachment to knock down skittles in the fastest time possible.

With decades of experience behind the controls, Dave Smith demonstrated precision and consistency, securing victory in the first two rounds and ultimately claiming the overall title. However, the excitement didn’t end there.

In a surprise twist, the final round introduced a unique challenge: both competitors were blindfolded. In an impressive display of skill and composure, Finlay Gallagher rose to the occasion, redeeming himself with a win in what proved to be a staggeringly difficult and entertaining finale.

The event drew in hundreds of spectators, all eager to witness the thrilling showdown and cheer on both competitors from the sidelines. The atmosphere was electric as visitors watched two generations of construction talent go head-to-head in a truly unique setting.

Finlay Gallagher shared his enthusiasm following the event:
“It was an amazing day at Diggerland. I was definitely nervous going up against Dave, especially knowing he has over 20 years of experience, but I enjoyed every minute of it. It was a fantastic opportunity and such a fun challenge.”

Dave Smith, Park Manager at Diggerland Kent, also reflected on the experience:
“I have to admit, I was a bit nervous myself, especially with such a big crowd watching, but I’m really pleased to have won. It was a brilliant experience competing against Finlay. He’s a great example of the next generation in the construction industry, and it was a pleasure to take part in something like this together.”

Events like this highlight Diggerland’s unique ability to combine real construction machinery with fun, interactive experiences for all ages. The park continues to innovate and entertain, offering visitors unforgettable days out with a difference.
