Historic site turns to modern marketing methods

One of Kent’s best loved heritage sites turned to modern-day methods to attract the attention of families with young children at the weekend.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Trust, which commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of ‘the Few’ who kept this country safe from invasion in 1940, employed 21st century methods to raise the awareness of the clifftop site at Capel-le-Ferne near Folkestone.

The Trust threw open its doors to social media content creators to help spread the word about the Memorial and promote a half-term ‘buy one, get one free’ ticket offer for its unique Scramble Experience in The Wing.

Families with an impressive number of followers on Facebook and Instagram were invited to sample The Experience and help tell the world about the Memorial and the men of the Royal Air Force whose bravery it commemorates.

The initiative was hailed as “a great success” by Trust honorary secretary Patrick Tootal. “The Trust is keen to appeal to a younger audience, and The Scramble Experience is designed with families in mind,” he commented.

“We already have a good following on social media and we decided it would be a good exercise to encourage some well-known family content creators to help us spread the message even wider by posting to their followers. It was a successful day and they all enjoyed their visit, as well as helping raise awareness of the Memorial.”
