Our latest exhibition in the James Forbes Gallery has now opened, an
installation by award-winning artist Mark Humphrey. Last seen on display in
2016, Lost Soldiers is a powerful statement about the human loss of life
caused by war, comprising 101 original helmets sourced from battles ranging
from 1914 to 2016, and displayed in concentric circles, circling towards an
empty toolbox.
The installation features the voices of current and retired Royal Engineers, reading
from diaries from the Museum archives, documenting the past activities of Royal
Engineers during times of conflict.
Mark comments, ‘The circular display enables the audience to freely engage and
amplifies the connection with these soldiers, from multiple conflicts that took place
across the world over the last one hundred years. The last post, without a helmet,
represents the unknown battle at the time the artwork was completed.’
Lost Soldiers was commissioned by the Canary Wharf Group, supported by the
Royal British Legion and built with the Corps of Royal Engineers for the First World
War Centenary public art remembrance.
The installation will be on display until 4th May 2025, after which it will be available to tour to other organisations on a long-term or permanent basis. The end of the exhibition will be marked by a closing event on 1st may, with a Q and A from Mark, and an opportunity for the public to visit the Museum and exhibition after hours.
