Rare rooftop tours of Commissioner’s House launched to support major restoration project

Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust is opening the rooftop of Commissioner’s House to the public for the first time, offering a unique, limited-time opportunity to experience Britain’s oldest intact naval residence from a completely new perspective.

Commissioner’s House was built in 1704 for Captain George St Lo. For over 300 years it has played a central role in British naval history, overseeing the construction of ships like HMS VICTORY and serving as a strategic command centre through both World Wars. Now this extraordinary building is undergoing a major restoration programme and the public can play a direct part its preservation.

To help raise the vital funds needed to complete the restoration project, the Trust is offering exclusive rooftop tours for a limited time. Led by Nigel Howard, Assistant Director for Historic Buildings and Projects, each tour will take visitors above the iconic structure for views across the Historic Dockyard estate and a rare chance to understand the importance and urgency of preserving this national treasure.

Richard Morsley, Chief Executive, Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust, said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Commissioner’s House from a completely new angle. Climbing onto the roof of a Scheduled Ancient Monument that has stood the test of time for more than three centuries is a powerful reminder of why a restoration project of this scale is so important. Every ticket sold for these tours will directly support the urgent work required to protect this remarkable building for generations to come.”

The ambitious project is backed by generous support from several Trusts and Foundations, but additional funding is needed to complete the work and secure the building’s long-term future. All proceeds from the rooftop tours go directly towards the project, giving visitors the chance to contribute in a meaningful way while enjoying an unforgettable experience.
