Set Sail for Adventure: The Historic Dockyard Chatham Announces “Kids Go Free” All Summer Long

During its 40th anniversary year, Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust is delighted to announce an exciting new offer for families this summer: Kids Go Free. From Saturday 27 July to Sunday 1 September, children can enjoy free admission to The Historic Dockyard Chatham, one of the UK’s most fascinating maritime heritage sites.

Chatham Dockyard’s gates closed on 30 March 1984, ending 400 years of the Royal Navy’s presence in Chatham and the surrounding area. The very same day, Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust was formed to save 80 acres of this uniquely historic site. Today, The Historic Dockyard Chatham, offers an incredible array of attractions and exhibitions, perfect for a family day out. To mark this milestone anniversary, the Trust is hosting a range of events and activities throughout the year, providing everyone with the opportunity to engage in its rich history. This summer, families can be part of this celebration at a discounted price.

Families who take advantage of this offer will enjoy a significantly reduced annual admission ticket, granting unlimited visits throughout the year. They can delve into four centuries of maritime heritage by climbing aboard three historic warships, walking the iconic ¼ mile double ropewalk, engaging with history in the numerous galleries, and immersing themselves in the fascinating stories of the Dockyard and its people. Additionally, there will be special family activities available during school holidays.

Highlights of the visit include:

  • New for 2024 – The Game is Afoot: Channel Sherlock Holmes, follow the clues, crack the codes and solve a mystery lost to history. Only the sharpest minds will triumph.
  • Historic Warships: Step aboard three magnificent warships: HMS GANNET, a sloop of the Victorian Navy; HMS CAVALIER, a Second World War Destroyer; and HM Submarine OCELOT, a cold war submarine.
  • Learn the Ropes: Discover the ancient art of ropemaking, its vital role in supporting Chatham’s shipbuilding and witness rope making demonstrations on the ¼ mile ropewalk.
  • RNLI 200: The Exhibition: Celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, hear the heroic tales of the men and women who have risked their lives to save others, in times of calm and amidst the most treacherous storms.

 Offer Details:

  • Offer Period: Saturday 27 July – Sunday 1 September 2024.
  • Eligibility: One free child entry (aged 15 and under), when accompanied by a full paying adult. Not available in conjunction with any other offer.
  • Tickets: Available online at thedockyard.co.uk or at The Historic Dockyard Chatham.

Richard Morsley, Chief Executive, Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust said:

“This 40th anniversary year is a momentous occasion for us, and we are delighted to invite families to join us for a memorable visit at a reduced rate this summer. Not only can families enjoy our extensive galleries and exhibitions, but they can also take part in our brand-new summer activity, The Game is Afoot. Children can channel their inner Sherlock Holmes to become Dockyard Detectives and solve clues across the Dockyard to crack a true crime from 1887.”

In addition to the summer programme, the Historic Dockyard will be hosting further special events and activities to mark the anniversary year. Families are encouraged to check the website for the latest updates.
