Biddenden Ortega 2021 Wins Silver Medal at IWSC 2022

Biddenden Ortega 2021 has been awarded a Silver Medal at the International Wines & Spirits Competition 2022, announced on 23rd May 2022.

The awards, which were founded in 1969, the same year as Biddenden, are judged by some of the world’s most eminent wine professionals, recognising the very best wines from across the globe.  The judging process is tightly structured & rigorous, with around 65 wines assessed each day, allowing time for panel discussion and avoiding palate fatigue.  Each wine is pre-poured into numbered glasses, guaranteeing total anonymity.

To achieve a Silver Medal, a wine must score between 90-94 points out of 100, classing the wine as “An accomplished wine with considerable personality.  A classic example of its style or variety”.

Biddenden Ortega 2021 was described by the judges as “Summer picnics on daisy strewn lawns, abundant with peach, nectarine, apples and lemons.  Lovely and creamy, with lees and limestone persistence”.

Biddenden Pinot Reserve 2018 scooped a Bronze Medal, indictive of a “perfectly well made wine which provides an enjoyable drinking experience” for which the judges’ comments included “Deep, dark berries, white flowers, apple, citrus and vanilla with smokiness.  It has a creamy and rich body”.

Tom Barnes, General Manager at Biddenden Vineyards comments “2021’s conditions out in the vineyard were certainly challenging, with frost early in the year, followed by rain through much of the summer and into the start of harvest.  This was exacerbated by the fact it followed three very favourable growing seasons in the years before and meant that a large amount of effort was put into not only growing a quality crop, but also with our creativity in the winery.” He continues “We are lucky to be able to call on over 50 years of winemaking experience, through variable growing seasons, which allows us to be able to vary our approach but still produce the style and consistency of wine we are known for.  To have this recognised by a competition such as the IWSC is a real privilege and something we are very proud of here at Biddenden.”

Both award-winning wines, along with Biddenden’s full range of still & sparkling wines may be purchased direct from the cellar door as well as online for nationwide delivery via our online shop.
