Orchard Design: About the Day

This one-day orchard design course is for anyone thinking of establishing an orchard or becoming involved in a community orchard project. You will learn about site assessment and rootstocks, planting patterns and spacing, the number and choice of fruit tree varieties, orchard layout, and projected yield. The day includes a tour of part of the National Fruit Collections.

There are two field exercises, which give first-hand experience of site survey and orchard layout. The day concludes with a discussion of case studies brought by the students, and you are encouraged to bring photos of your site and/or trees.

You will need outdoor clothes including boots, a clipboard, writing materials, a calculator, and the capacity to be active outdoors. Knowledge of the basics of fruit growing, and preferably some experience, will be helpful.

What people say…

‘Wonderful. Phillip has outstanding knowledge and passion for his subject and this was conveyed throughout the day. We were at ease to ask detailed questions. Useful further resources. Would like to know more about selecting varieties and compatibility and will return for the relevant fruit days – apple cherry and plum days. Thank you for providing this course.
