Bugs, Boots & Backpacks

Children can get creative and have fun as they learn about nature during the February half-term holidays at Hever Castle.

Bugs, Boots and Backpacks, a brand new offering at Hever, is a hands-on, outdoor event which sees children designing and building cozy Bug Hotels for their tiny insect friends, as well as making a clay bug to take home and even joining in a muddy boot parade.

This educational event will give parents and children a chance to explore the natural world as they gather treasures, twigs, leaves, bark and pinecones from Hever’s grounds. They will then use their findings to create safe, welcoming homes for creatures such as ladybirds, beetles and solitary bees.

Daily activities, all included with admission, are as follows:

* Make Your Own Bug Hotel. This craft activity runs daily and sets participants the challenge of exploring the outdoors and collecting natural treasures, using only loose, fallen items they find on the ground.

* Discover where the Tiniest Guests Check In, and Nature Comes To Life. Explore Hever’s handcrafted Bug Hotel, built with natural materials. Take a peek inside this special shelter for beetles, bees, spiders and other little creatures, which all play their part in the natural world, and learn how bugs help keep nature buzzing.

* Create Your Own Clay Bug. Families can join Catkin & Conker as they have a go in the backpack ‘lucky dip, creating their very own bug from clay, sticks, conkers and leaves. Then there’s the chance to paint up a storm with mud on a giant canvas, in the Boot Parade at 11.30 and 2.30, with mud-proof boots required!

Catkin & Conker bring nature to life with fun, creative workshops for all ages, adding a little wildness and wonder to a family day out.
